Tezpur to Bomdila – Gateway to the Hills
Your Tawang Circuit adventure usually begins from Tezpur, Assam, where the plains meet the foothills. The drive to Bomdila is breathtaking, passing through lush tea gardens and gradually ascending into pine-covered mountains. Bomdila is a quiet hill town known for its monastery, orchid gardens, and sweeping valley views. Spend the night here to acclimatize and enjoy local Monpa food, such as momos and thukpa.
Bomdila to Dirang – Orchards & Monasteries
The next leg takes you to Dirang, a beautiful valley town known for its kiwi and apple orchards. Dirang Dzong, a centuries-old fort, offers a glimpse into the region’s history, while the Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery is perfect for a peaceful stop. Don’t miss the natural hot water springs, ideal for a relaxing dip after a day’s drive. Dirang is also a great base for birdwatchers and photographers, thanks to its rich biodiversity and stunning sunsets.
Dirang to Tawang – Crossing Sela Pass
Perhaps the most thrilling part of the trip is the drive across Sela Pass (13,700 ft). The high-altitude pass is often snow-covered, making it a picture-perfect stop. Nearby lies Sela Lake, a turquoise gem amid snowy peaks. En route, visit Jaswant Garh War Memorial, dedicated to Rifleman Jaswant Singh, a hero of the 1962 war. After a few more winding bends, you finally reach Tawang, the crown jewel of Arunachal tourism.
Tawang – Monasteries, Lakes & Culture
Spend at least two nights exploring Tawang’s highlights. The Tawang Monastery, India’s largest, is a must-visit, offering breathtaking views and spiritual ambiance. Head to Sangetsar Lake (famously called Madhuri Lake), PT Tso Lake, and Nuranang Falls for a mix of natural beauty and adventure. Tawang is also an excellent place to shop for Monpa handicrafts and taste local delicacies like butter tea, yak cheese, and Zan (a traditional millet porridge).
Beyond Tawang – Zemithang & Bum La Pass
For those who want to go further, a trip to Bum La Pass, near the Indo-China border, is highly recommended. This requires a special permit, but the views and sense of remoteness are unforgettable. You can also visit Zemithang, a quiet village known for its Gorsam Chorten, one of the largest stupas in Arunachal Pradesh. These side trips make your journey even more rewarding and offbeat.
